This bird is very striking from a distance and completely badass from close range! Warblers might have more varied and intricate plumage patterns, but this species gets my vote for the most striking North American passerine. This male was very proficient at catching insects, and he'd periodically depart his roadside perch to deliver food to a presumed nest in the adjacent reeds. He was utilizing a metal post in this instance, so I went with a close-cropped headshot to keep the unnatural object out of the frame. Fortunately, the photo was taken at the minimum focusing distance of my lens (about 14 feet) so I had plenty of detail to spare once the image was cropped.
