Bufflehead
This species is usually very difficult - if not impossible - to approach, so I couldn't believe my luck when this curious male paddled towards me in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Undoubtedly habituated to people and handouts in those urban surrounds, he presented a rare opportunity to capture the fine feather detail on his iridescent head. Exposing this high-contrast subject in bright sunlight is really difficult, but I think I hung onto the whites pretty well.
