Thick-billed Euphonia

The colorful euphonias were once considered members of the tanager family, but molecular evidence has since revealed them more closely related to finches. The Thick-billed variety ranges from Costa Rica to Bolivia where it inhabits primary and secondary growth below ~2000 meters, the tiny birds always willing to oblige birders and photographers at lodge fruit feeders. This male materialized at the Tinamu Lodge outside Manizales in Colombia's Central Andes, and I selected to a 16x9 crop to show a bit more of the foliated perch than a standard landscape 1.5x1 format would allow.
