Pigeon Guillemot
As wintering waterfowl depart the California Coast in April, these little alcids return to breed, counterintuitively from more northerly wintering grounds. They're usually pretty tolerant of my inflatable kayak once on territory, and they provide steady summer shooting near my San Mateo home. They're always an exposure challenge, but the soft morning light makes it easier to hold onto the detail in the diagnostic white wing patch.
