Southern Lapwing
I'm not sure there's a species which is more emblematic of South America than this shorebird. They're found in coastal lagoons and in the high Andes, and they seem as comfortable in urban parks as they do in windswept grasslands. I crawled across sixty feet of rocky beach to approach this individual, and I isolated this headshot to give a detailed view of their beautiful plumage and striking pink eye.
