This shot represents a conscious departure from my usual style. In always striving for perfectly clean backgrounds. I realized I often ignore the contribution of habitat to a species' story. This colorful Andean cotinga spends most of its time foraging in the upper canopy of forests between 4,600 and 10,500 feet (1,400 - 3,200 meters), so I wanted to represent its arboreal affinity accordingly. This individual was approaching a ground-level feeding station, but I chose to shoot it 'in-habitat' rather than waiting for a more exposed but artificial opportunity. Shooting set-ups is fun and easy but makes for predictable frames that usually don't tell much of a story. I do exclusively field-type shooting in the US, and I am looking forward to mastering in-habitat shooting in the tropics as well.
