This incredible bird, the only species possessing a beak longer than its body, inhabits high Andean elevations from Venezuela to Bolivia. This shot was captured at a feeder array at 10,000 feet in Colombia's Central Andes. The background is approaching cloud, and I think the high-key effect helps highlight his namesake feature. Though not very experienced with flash, I used a bit of fill to reveal color and detail on what would otherwise be an underexposed subject. Under other circumstances, I'd prefer a more interesting perch (i.e. mossy), but I think the minimalist approach helps direct viewer attention towards the beak.
