Lesser Violetear

Formerly conspecific with Mexican Violetear under the now-defunct rubric of Green Violetear, the Lesser Violetear ranges from Costa Rica south to Bolivia (the Mexican ranges from Nicaragua north to Mexico). Within its range, the Lesser is most likely to be confused with Sparkling Violetear, a similarly colored but larger species shown in the previous photograph; please note the Sparkling's characteristic purple belly. This perch is boring but allows a nice comparison between the two species.
